Dave’s 5/8 Scale Case
Our Steam Crew member Dave W dreamed of having a scale model of the Case traction engines he’s come to enjoy. When the options for buying a model Case seemed slim to none, he decided he would just build one! Dave spent time learning and acquiring a passion for steam engines from the Lancaster Brothers, so the idea of building his own steam engine came naturally.

In 2011, Dave started building his model Case traction engine. After working on the project non-stop, from designing all aspects to fabricating to completing the engine, Dave had built his 5/8 scale Case model in 2013.
Dave modeled the 5/8 scale from his own 45 HP Case engine. He decided on the 5/8 scale versus a more usual 1/2 scale for a more comfortable operating size.
From Dave’s Design to J.S.Company’s Manufacturing
For metal crafting, boiler work, or other engine needs, Ohio-Based JS Company was at the top of the list
The whistle is a custom build and has a serial number from J.S. Company. The whistle is a mocking bird whistle that changes tune by adjusting the tension on the pull chain.
The boiler was custom made according to Dave’s orders by J.S Company of Middlefield, OH. The boiler can withstand 175 psi and holds 60 gallons of water. The firebox is 2 feet long. When loaded with water and coal, the steam engine weighs 5400 lbs. It takes the engine between 1 and 1&1/2 hours to make steam.

The gearings are from a Massey Harris 555 and John Deere D Browning. The latest paint job was completed in 2012.

Dave is happy with how his model Case runs and operates. The 5/8 scale Case might not have a long history, but that’s because it’s still being made. Be part of the Case’s history by checking it out at some of the Steam Shows it travels to – Chickentown Gas and Steam, National Threshers Association, Farmers and Threshermens Jubilee.
